Fundamentals of Ceramics 2nd Edition by M.W Barsoum presents readers with an exceptionally clear and complete introduction to ceramic science. Author provides introductory coverage of ceramics, their constructions, and properties, with a distinct emphasis on strong state physics and chemistry. Key equations are derived from first principles to make sure a radical understanding of the ideas involved.
The book divides naturally into two parts. Chapters 1 to 9 consider bonding in ceramics and their resultant physical constructions, and the electrical, thermal, and other properties that are depending on bonding type. The second part (Chapters 11 to sixteen) offers with those elements which might be decided by microstructure, reminiscent of fracture and fatigue, and thermal, dielectric, magnetic, and optical properties. Linking the 2 sections is Chapter 10, which describes sintering, grain growth, and the development of microstructure.
It's ideally suited to senior undergraduate and graduate college students of materials science and engineering and related subjects. While the focus of the text is ceramics, the treatment of the kinetics of materials process is extremely understandable and simply applied to other materials systems. It's an excellent introduction to mass transport and phase transformations in materials.
Finally, it is an excellent textbook for ceramics courses worldwide, very little competition, certainly none at a price affordable by students. There are good sets of Worked Examples and end-of chapter problems with answers. Solution manual is available with detailed solutions to most problems. "Experimental Details" section follows the introduction of a new property or phenomenon and describes the techniques by which they are measured and quantified.
